Panel Conversation: Decolonising Philanthropy: Adjusting the Balance of Power for Good
On 29 February, Giving Women held a panel conversation on decolonising philanthropy. In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the need to challenge the colonial underpinnings of philanthropic practices and shift power dynamics towards those directly impacted by funding decisions.
This panel hosted by Giving Women had at the centre of the conversation local practitioners from the field, Gauri Mahendra from UMEED and Dr. Abiodun Adereni, from Help Mum, who expressed how they see the barriers created by the power dynamics of funders and their partners. The panel included Alisha Fernandez Miranda, Founder and Chair of I.G Advisors and Susan Snider, Vice-President of Equality Fund, who under the brilliant moderation of Takhani Bonnet, Independent Philanthropy Advisor and Giving Woman, unpacked tangible examples and best practices around how we can all work together, to take actionable steps to make progress. This included reflecting on what has worked well, as well as acknowledging failures and areas for improvement.
We invite you to watch the full conversation.
