Enabling women slum-dwellers in India access healthy, dignified and ecological habitats

Mrs. Bijal Brahmbhatt, co-founder and executive director of Mahila Housing Trust (MHT), will speak about her work to mobilise, organise and empower disenfranchised women through knowledge, capability and technical services that enable them to secure decent habitats in urban and peri-urban environments. MHT’s participatory approach identifies female slum leaders from community-based organizations and trains them to interact and negotiate with local government and institutions on behalf of their communities. MHT has served over 1.5 million people in nearly 900 slums in 7 Indian states by enabling them to claim their rights and access decent housing and improved living environments, as well as increasing their resilience to climate and energy-related threats.

Speaker: Ms. Bijal Brahmbhatt, co-founder and director of Mahila Housing Trust, a WomenChangeMakers Fellow of the Womanity Foundation.
