Women and Prisons

Prison is a closed world, mainly conceived by men for men. Women form a minority of the prison population (between 3 to 5%). This has an impact on their conditions of detention and the ability to take into consideration their specific needs. Detention of mothers also affect their children, far beyond the babies that can stay with them in prison. Finally, women are also affected by detention as visitors and wives, mothers, sisters of detainees. The panel will enable a discussion on the specific needs and rights of women detainees as well as discuss the impact of detention on families and children.

The panel will be moderated by Atalanti Moquette, Founder of Giving Women, and our confirmed panel speakers are:

Barbara Bernath: the Secretary General of the Association for the Prevention of Torture, a Geneva based international NGO promoting transparency of places of detention. She studied Political Science and International Relations, and holds a Masters degree in human rights. Prior to joining APT, she worked for the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs and worked with the ICRC in Colombia. She was responsible for APT’s Europe programme and then Detention Monitoring Programme, and became Chief of Operations in 2009. She has experience in visiting prisons and training bodies monitoring prison conditions.

Viviane Schekter: has a Masters in psychology and training in psychotherapy. She started her career as a psychologist in prison and worked in several prisons in Switzerland. In 1995, she joined a Geneva NGO Carrefour Prison, became Director in 2005 and developed support for family and children of detainees. In 2012, the NGO became a Foundation Relais Enfants Parents Romands (REPR pronounce Repères) and axpanded to cover Romandie. She is also training swiss prison staff on psychology and she is an active member of the European network of Children of Prisoners Europe.
